Bollywood's kung fu action comedy debut

Chandni Chowk to China is also known as CC2C and it is a Hindi action comedy with the elements of kung fu. It was released in 2009 and directed by Nikhil Advani. It stars such Bollywood celebrity actors as Akshay Kumar and Deepika Padukone with such veterans of Indian and Chinese cinematograph as Mithun Chakraborty and Gordon Liu. The film was shot in China as well as in Bangkok and Thailand.

Akshay Kumar plays Sidhu, who is a lowly inhabitant of Chandni Chowk. On this market district of Dehli he chops vegetables in a stepfather’s restaurant and dreams of a better and more heroic life and other destiny than this goddamn place. He consults all the spiritual forces and applies for astrologists and tarot card readers in hope that he is not where he is supposed to be.

Sidhu is then sort of rescued by two strangers and travelers who came from a small Chinese village. They believed that Sidhu was a reincarnation of their legendary hero and prince Liu Sheng and they urged Sidhu to return to their village in order to restore piece and help the villagers to get rid of the ugly wicked villain Hojo.

However, led astray by Chopstick (acted by Ranvir Shorey), Sidhy believes that all the world delights expect him in China and cares very little about the prospective confrontation with the villain Hojo, in which he is sure to fail. He grabs the opportunity to live the live he imagined in his dreams for so long and sets off to China without any trace of idea what awaits him.

The film is positioned as the first Bolliwood kung fu action comedy but there is more to that. It contains all the traditional features of Hindi films with all the song and dance stuff and it is an action comedy as well as a musical and a drama.

Akshay Kumar reminds of a Jackie Chan character as he shows the wonders of acrobatics and as a comic actor he makes the best of every situation and every joke is very well presented. He also reminds of Adam Sandler; however, Kumar is more a comedy star than a romantic character as his play with Deepika Padukone, co-star, lacks the spark. However, the scene with red umbrella and panorama of Shanghai is well worth the visit to the movie.

Chandni Chowk to China can be called a new word in the Indian cinema and there are several reasons. One of them is economic as Warner Brothers company distributed the film and it was shown in the states. This is an opportunity for Bollywood to enter a new market. Besides, as long as the film was shot in China and the plot is around Chinese legend, the movie produces good cultural effect and helps to improve Indian-Chinese relationships.

To cap it all, this is a curious piece of work and it is possible for everyone to something for their liking. 154 of the movie can very well raise the interest to the films from other continent and Akshay Kumar will definitely wind his audience.
